Wristcutters: A Love Story
I'm watching one of my favourite films 'Wristcutters: A Love Story', on my r4 card. It's an offbeat sort of fantasy romance comedy set in this strange afterlife limbo for people who have committed suicide.
It's based on the short story "Kneller's Happy Campers" by Etgar Keret, and stars Patrick Fugit, Shannyn Sossamon and Shea Whigham.
They're all in this sort of in-between land which feels really empty and desolate, it's always hot and dry, there are no stars at night and nobody can smile. It's not that they won't smile by choice or misery, they physically cannot, and they'd probably be too miserable to anyway.
It's a really weird, unusual but charming film, a quirky concept executed so brilliantly, with a great romantic undercurrent running through it too.
Best of all, it features Tom Waits as Kneller, and he's absolutely brilliant in it, I love seeing him acting in movies almost as much as I love his music!
Speaking of music, Gogol Bordello made most of the soundtrack but Tom Waits' 'Dead And Lovely' features in the opening credits. Joy Division's 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' and Christian Death's 'Deathwish' also feature, and both band's were fronted by singers who committed suicide.
